Gerrit ten Broeke in Bangladesh

Yesterday I left Chitalmari again and travelled to Dhaka .I had a fruitful time in the beautiful green countryside, met a lot of cordial people and could support the projects properly, really encouraging. I enjoyed my morning walk with Sattaj and we reached a new milestone : a run to Bagerhat, 25 km, in 2,5 hours. Today I relaxed in Dhaka by walking in town en talking with local people on the railway tracks. Tomorrow, Sunday, I will return to my family in the Netherlands.

Yesterday we agreed with Pankash in the village Santospur to become our second mushroom farmer in partnership with Renaissance, he started immediately preparing his land for construction. Today we visited Partho, brother of my friend Shuvo, in hospital in Khulna, he broke his leg seriously in a motorcycle accident. During our trip we met a shepherd with pigs ! Renaissance created a computer training room for all the youthclub members of their 5 VSO villages.

Sunday evening I finally arrived in Chitalmari. Traveling outside Dhaka is very difficult , only a few busses are available because of the violent strikes. The best way is to get a domestic flight to Jessore and therefore I had to stay in Dhaka for an extra 2 days. In the meantime I visited the brand new VSO office and repaired my computer. I stay in my apparment at Renaissance office and was welcomed very heartly by a lot of people, even my old spider was there !

Wednesday 21 of January I will leave for Bangladesh. I stay 2 weeks in Chitalmari at Renaissance,my former employer by VSO. The main goal is to support strawberry and mushroom farmers in the rural areas. I received money from a local Dutch foundation , Winkel van Sinkel Grubbenvorst ( http://winkelvansinkel-pmc.nl) and also from some close friends to buy strawberry saplings, build mushroom cultivation houses, invest in marketing and distribution ect. The strawberry saplings are already planted in December, so hope to taste the first fruits.
I look forward to meet old friends again and to taste the atmosphere of this dynamic country.

De tijd gaat nu snel , veel te snel voor wat er nog moet gebeuren. Gelukkig is de politieke onrust na de verkiezingen redelijk snel weg geëbd, we genieten ervan zo lang het duurt. Het gebouw waar de koelcel in staat en waar ook ruimte is voor een winkel en kantoor van Renaissance is nog niet af, maar het dak zit er op. Mooi om te zien hoe dat gaat, ze lassen gewoon door als het donker wordt, met een zaklantaarn tussen de tanden! De stroomaansluiting voor de koelcel is vorige week om onduidelijke redenen uitgesteld. Het leidingwerk is bijna klaar, dan moet de airco er nog in, en als laatste een paar dagen proefdraaien. Dat zal met een dieselgenerator moeten gebeuren, pech, veel extra kosten voor huur en brandstof. Gelukkig zijn de aanpassingen van de oesterzammenschuur zo goed als klaar, de betonnen vloer ligt er strak in, alleen nog een extra opslagrek en wat verstevigingen van de houtconstructie moeten nog gedaan worden. De kosten van dit alles zijn mede gefinancierd door Jan en Agnes, Nederlandse vrienden die hier in augustus op bezoek zijn geweest.
Wat ook goed gaat zijn de aardbeien, volop in bloei en de eerste vruchten worden volgende week geoogst. De telers zijn alleenheersers in Chitalmari , er is veel belangstelling voor, ze gaan er tussen de 4 en 5 euro/kg voor beuren. Ondanks het feit dat ze de planten van VSO hebben gekregen hebben ze toch nog wel behoorlijk kosten moeten maken voor compost,kunstmest, bestrijdingdings middelen en netten om de vogels te weren, maar er zal zeker behoorlijk winst gemaakt gaan worden. De rijstvelden zijn nu klaar en beginnen diepgroen te kleuren, een prachtig gezicht. Dat betekent nu een beetje rust voor de boeren, wel wordt er nog veel groente geoogst, veel tomaten, witte kool, aubergines ,koolrabi , bloemkool. spinazie en wortelen. De tempertuur is perfect voor deze groentes,overdag 25 graden en s’nachts koelt het af tot een graadje of 12. De Hindoes zijn aan hun festivalseizoen begonnen , gistermiddag de eerste “mohodshop” bezocht , het was druk en het ging er heel uitbundig aan toe. Volgende week is het de puja van Sarawati, de godin van de kennis en kunst, vooral gevierd door schoolkinderen en studenten, met vooral veel moderne muziek.

Time flies, because still a lot to do. Happily the political unrest has been stopped after the elections, we enjoy it as long s it takes. The building for coldstore, shop and office for Renasisance has not been finished yet but the roof is on. Nice to see how people work, welding continuous in dark, with a torch between the teeth ! The power connection for the coldstore is postponed last week, for unknown reasons. The electrical network in the building is almost ready, then the airco will be installed and finaly the system test. For this we need now a diesel generator, badluck, extra cost for rent and fuel.
Happily the modification of the mushroom farm is almost ready, the concrete floor has been laid ,only an extra storage rack and some improvements of the wooden construction have to be done. The cost of this project are partly financed by Jan en Agnes, friends from the Netherlands who visited Chitalmari last August.
Also our strawberry project looks good, the plants start flowering and the first fruits are harvested next week. The growers are monopolist in Chitalmari and there is a lot of demand, probably they get an attractive price of 4-5 euro per kg. They got the plants for free from VSO, but had to pay yourself the compost, fertilizer en nets to keep the birds away. In spite of this there will be a reasonable profit left. Paddy land is ready now and begins to color deep green , very nice scenery.The famers are less busy now but there are still a lot of vergetables harvested like tomatoes, cabbage,aubergines kohlrabi,spinach, cauliflower and carrots.The weather is perfect for this vegatables, in daytime around 25 degrees en during the night around 12. The Hindus started their festival season, yesterday afternoon I visited the first“mohodshop” , a lot of people and an exciting atmosphere. Next week they celebrate the puja of Sarawati,the goddess of knowledge and arts, mainly by school kids and students supported with lots of mainly modern music.
